Chasing Sources Things we think we know While reading the sports section in my local newspaper yesterday, I came across a quote that I particularly liked, attributed to legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden: "Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die tomorrow"Great sentiment but wrong attribution. The quote is actually from Mahatma Gandhi (not Ghandi!) and in its original form looks like this: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”I have occasionally chased sources for a news story I wanted to link to, only to have everything point back to the original article as the source for the story. A news story appearing 30,000 times in Google or Bing only means that it has been cited 30,000 times ... not that it is 30,000 times more accurate than a story cited only once. (My advice: Verify ... then verify some more. If you look stupid for citing an unverified source, you will look stupider (more stupid?) for declaring yourself duped). However, the use of search engines (and brains) can often result in finding other interesting things. That research led me to quotes from John Wooden and quotes from Mahatma Gandhi to share here: You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.So while sourcing a story or a quote can uncover errors (or lead you right back to the original story!), it can also lead you to other knowledge. Got GOTV Post? From now until election day, J Town will Republish (and spotlight in our Got Post? table) personal stories of GOTV: phonebanking and canvassing and support. If you find such a story and you are a Contributor, Republish it to our group queue. If you are not a Contributor, message one of the Editors directly (don't message the Group because we will not get notified!) and we will Republish it. We are looking for personal stories of real life activism, not just links to phonebanking sites. Thank you in advance for your contributions!! |
